7、Collaborative Learning Through Technology (Phone App)

Wildlife Reserves Singapore

This presentation focuses on how Wildlife Reserves Singapore uses technology to engage students in conservation education. An iPhone application ‘Education@Zoo’ was developed in collaboration with Fajar Secondary School and Nanyang Polytechnic, and funded by the Ministry of Education. The students from Fajar Secondary School carried out research on animals to be featured in a phone app and to provide the content, which was then programmed by Nanyang Polytechnic in the phone app. After the app ‘Education@Zoo’ was uploaded at the iPhone app store, the students made use of the app to design a Learning Trail and acted as ‘teacher guides’ to educate younger students about wildlife conservation.

This project highlighted the importance of co-operative efforts of multi-parties to achieve a common goal. It also provided opportunities for the students to learn more about animals and the spirit of teamwork through the project. Finally, the students serve as ‘teachers’ and transfer their knowledge to other students.
